Where are the Construction Jobs in Canada?

With the economy constantly changing and employment numbers shifting,  location is something that needs to be considered when planning a career. This is especially true within the construction industry as projects are constantly starting and finishing.  According to Monster.ca the future will see 4  provinces become hotspots for construction employment in Canada. They are as follows :

1)      Newfoundland and Labrador

When I think of Newfoundland and Labrador, I don’t usually think of a booming economy, or a hot job market. However,  with the construction of a $3 billion dollar nickel mine processing facility on the shores of Placentia Bay, talk of an underground mine in Labrador and oil and gas exploration companies eyeing Newfoundland, many feel that we are seeing the beginning stages of tremendous growth in the energy and mining sectors. This growth will bring with it significant career opportunities for those in construction and trades if they are willing to consider Newfoundland and Labrador.  Although this is all speculative,  Newfoundland Labrador could be a consideration for those interested in construction jobs in Canada in the coming years.

2)  Manitoba

Manitoba could be another hidden gem in terms of future construction career potential in Canada. This province is expected to surpass the 1.8 percent national growth average this year and has been seeing overall growth in most sectors for the last decade.  buildforce.ca, a construction industry organization providing information on labour markets, reported Manitoba’s construction industry has been busy for the last twenty years. Construction of a new 33 story office tower, the largest of its kind is set to begin in downtown Winnipeg.   With other projects in works construction jobs in this province could be plentiful .

3)     Quebec

Even with the language barriers that exist and the tarnished past of the construction industry in Quebec, many feel the future is bright for construction careers in Quebec. Although the Montreal condo boom has slowed,  projects like the  Plan Nord, a multi billion dollar  development project in Northern  Quebec will create construction opportunities. There are also numerous new projects scheduled to start including nickel, ore, and gold mines which the government has suggested will create about 11,000 construction jobs.

4)      Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is another soon to be hot spot according to many. It leads Canada in terms of residential construction which is a great thing for those seeking a stable career in the construction industry. The commercial sector is strong and many significant projects are underway in the  mining and energy sectors. The government has announced it will focus on bringing skilled labour into the province  in the coming years.

Although this is all speculative and no one can predict the future, the 4 provinces listed above should be kept on the radar of anyone considering a career in construction in Canada.
